How Hard is Upper Mustang Trek?

A moderate Upper Mustang trek has difficulties in terms of several factors. However, if you are physically fit and eager to discover the trans-Himalayan terrain, the trek is definitely doable.

Upper Mustang is situated in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Mountain ranges. Trekking in this region is thus possible even during the monsoon/summer season.

However, it is best to add a day or two for travel disruptions due to bad weather in the lowlands.

The Upper Mustang trek is suitable for most walkers with no restrictions or limitations. Yet, this trek generally requires a reasonable level of fitness.

Walking Hours and Trek Duration

The terrain in Upper Mustang is not too difficult. The walking hours on average is between 5-7 hours, per day. The trip duration is usually around 17 days. However, depending on your preferences, you can make the trek longer or shorter.

Lo-Manthang and Chooser are some of the region’s main attractions, with elevations of 3810m and 3900m, respectively.

Walking at a higher altitude is undoubtedly more difficult than walking at a lower altitude.

As a result, you must prepare so that you can adjust to the high altitude. This makes your journeys much easier.

Upper Mustang Weather and temperature

The weather and temperature play a significant role in determining the difficulty of any trek. Upper Mustang, like most regions, has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

The spring season is a best time to trek Upper Mustang. During this season, the average daytime temperature ranges from 16 to 22 degrees Celsius. The weather is pleasant during this time of year, with a clear view of the mountains and the Himalayas. The nighttime temperature ranges from – 6 to 2 degrees Celsius.

This is an ideal temperature for trekking, making your journey much easier.

The number of tourists is high during this time. This season also witnesses one of Upper Mustang’s biggest festivals, the Tiji festival.

During summer the Upper Mustang rarely experiences rain because it lies in the rain shadow region of Annapurna range. So, you will be able to enjoy the dry and moderate weather at this time of the year.

The average daytime temperature ranges from 13 to 20 degrees Celsius. During the night, the temperature drops to -3 to 0 degrees Celsius.

Autumn is the best time to trek Upper Mustang. The autumn offers excellent visibility. During the day, the temperature ranges from 12 to 20 degrees Celsius, and at night, it drops to -8 to -4 degrees Celsius. However, since you will be indoors in the mornings and evenings this won’t be a problem.

Upper Mustang goes into hibernation mode during the winter. The average temperature during the day is 0 to 7 degrees Celsius and -22 to -18 degrees Celsius at night.

During winter, the Upper Mustang experiences heavy snowfall. Trekking in this area of Mustang during this season would be hard. Attempting this trek without the proper gear and equipment could be challenging.

As a result, trekking in Upper Mustang is not difficult; simply choose the season that best suits you.

Altitude Sickness While on the Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang trek takes you to an elevation of 3900m, so altitude sickness might not be issue.  Because altitude sickness is uncommon in elevations below 4000m, it is always beneficial to be aware of the situation.

Diamox and other anti-altitude sickness medications are beneficial. Also, descending to a lower altitude is the right approach. To take the necessary precautions, one should always look for support from the guides or team leaders.

Physical Fitness Required for the Upper Mustang Trek

Prior trekking experience is not required. However, trekkers should follow a routine like walks and jogs for a couple of weeks/months beforehand.

It helps to improve one’s stamina in the high altitudes and battle with shortness of breath. This, in fact, makes your trips much easier.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart, lung, or blood disease, you should consult your doctor before embarking on the trek.

Packing wisely can make your trek more convenient, smooth, and enjoyable. Packing varies depending on the season.

Hence, it is always a good idea to check the weather conditions before packing for a trek. Do not overload either yourself or the porter. It might be a burden that you will be carrying the entire journey.

Things to Consider Before Trekking to Upper Mustang

  • Walk slowly and rest as needed in between walks.
  • Dress in layers because the temperature changes with the increases and decreases in altitude.
  • The Upper Mustang trail is dominated by a strong wind from the north of the valley. Thus, having windproof gear is highly useful.
  • Keep extra time to discover local villages and in case of flight delays, especially during monsoon season.
  • Book hotels and flights advance during peak season.
  • Stay hydrated. Bring water bottles.
  • In the case of AMS, always ask for help.
